Introduction to Ashtanga Yoga and Pranayama with Maria Zavala

Highlights of Primary and Intermediate Series

This class will focus on the first half of Primary Series which consists of a strong standing sequence followed by seated postures designed to open the hips and shoulders in forward bends. The first half of Second Series works on the subtle body, (our nervous system), through backbends that open shoulders, upper back, and hip flexors. 

For those ready to move into deeper backbends, we will also practice backbend drop backs and scorpion pose from forearm balance and handstand. Class will start with an Introduction to Pranayama (breathing practice). As we move through the traditional Ashtanga sequence, modifications will be given for some of the more advanced postures. 
This class is suited for students of all levels, with some yoga experience.

Maria has the unique ability of harnessing her own practice and teaching expertise, to understand both what her students are experiencing and how to guide them through it. She brings a lively, playful dynamic to the practice, while maintaining disciplined focus.  She has taught yoga to students of all levels for over 15 years.
